Mia Amber & Re/Dress NYC

Posted in Entertainment, Mia in Motion on September 23, 2009 by miaamber

Recently I appeared on Fox 5’s Good Day NY to model the latest trends from ReDress NYC.  Redress is a fantastic, one of a kind, vintage shop in Brooklyn, NY that specializes in clothing size 12 on up! Woo Hoo!

Owner, Deb Malkin has been a fixture on the plus fashion scene for years and I got to know her through her work at Alight.com and The Fat Girl Flea Market.

Deb Malkin

ReDress NYC is chock full of great finds and take it from me– if you see something you love at the shop get it! It will NOT be there when you get back!

Back in April we took over ReDress for a Plus Model Magazine editorial using strictly fab finds from the store.  (I styled the shoot) Take a look at what we found:

The store it self is like stepping into an oasis.  It’s deceptively large and the staff is super friendly.  Plus, there are crinoline hanging everywhere and personally, they make me happy!

Mia Amber Asks… Isaac Mizrahi

Posted in Entertainment, Hollywood, Mia Amber Asks..., Pop Culture on September 14, 2009 by miaamber

I told you guys that I’ve been working on a new feature for you and as promised, I am overjoyed to introduce to you*drumroll please*

Mia Amber Asks…

Basically, I’m playing ‘3 questions’ with the hottest names in the fashion, entertainment and beauty biz in the hopes that the answers I get will help those aspiring to do the things that my guest icons are doing.

First up is the incomparable icon, Isaac Mizrahi!

Isaac Mizrahi

Mizrahi is one of my absolute favorite designers, authors and TV personalities and he never disappoints!

His eponymous line for Target stores became one of my (and my Mom’s) fashion staples and we were sorry to see it go.  It ranged from size 2-18 and was fantastic!

Isaac_Mizrahi_Target

However, Isaac has been working on lots of new projects such as his debut as host of Bravo’s new hit, “The Fashion Show” on which I made an appearance as a Front Row Fashion Insider on this seasons “Real Woman Challenge.”  Sitting with him on that front row and chatting while wearing one of his pieces was a surreal moment for me.

The Fashion Show

Isaac has been busy indeed with his many fashionable coals in the fire such as Bridal, Bags, Books and Bedding.

Take a look at the campaigns for his latest collections for Liz Claiborne.  It’s always fun to play “Where’s Waldo Isaac” in the ads!

I love that he uses women of all shapes and sizes in his campaigns.

I caught up to Mr. Mizrahi this week in the midst of his preparation for the showing of his 2010 Spring Collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week which he is streaming live at 2pm Thursday, September 17.

Go to www.WatchIsaac.com  and be apart of the front row!

Until then, let’s play “3 Questions”

MA:  What’s the worst career advice you’ve ever received?

IM: Someone (who shall remain nameless) told me to take it slow and not get carried away.  He told me to pace myself and try not to involve my ego in my work.  I guess that might be good advice to someone else but I can’t help being really passionate about what I do and measuring my personal worth by the work I do.  It’s just how I’m built.

MA: What was the best career advice you ever received?

IM:  The best advice came from my psychic in 1987 who told me to leave the company I was working for and start my own company.  It was something I was going to do anyway but having her blessing made it feel less crazy.

MA:  Good, bad or Ugly…what career advice do you have to offer a newbie in your field?

IM:  My best advice to newbies… have fun doing what you do.  If it’s not fun DON’T DO IT!

Mizrahi

I cannot thank you enough Isaac for your time and honesty. You are one of the best in the business and you’ll always have a place in my heart –and your clothes in my closet!

Don’t forget to tune in to watch Isaac Mizrahi debut his 2010 Spring collection this Thursday at 2pm sharp at www.WatchIsaac.com

XOXO,

Mia

International Mia Amber: The Fuller Woman Expo, Toronto

Posted in Curvy News, Mia in Motion on September 14, 2009 by miaamber

fullerwomanbanner

This weekend I had the absolute pleasure of appearing at The Fuller Woman Expo in Toronto.  Here’s some info about the expo:

The goal of the Fuller Woman Expo is to empower the plus-size woman to recognize her internal and external beauty; to educate and motivate through workshops and seminars, while providing information on the products and/or services available to them through various companies across the world.
Join us as we celebrate who you are, right now!

Event organizers Georgia Greenwood and Akelia Ellington rolled pulled all the stops to make me feel welcome.

Upon checking into the Beautiful Delta Chelsea Hotel my jaw dropped at the sheer enormity of my suite. Thanks ladies for such lovely accomodations!
Delta Chelsea Toronto
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to enjoy it very long as I had a few meetings set up with agencies in the Toronto market and I had just enough time to freshen up and throw on some make up before heading out to my first meeting.

By the way, the people of Toronto are incredibly sweet.  I felt very much at home there and due to the success of my meetings (woo hoo) I hope to be going back!

The next morning I headed straight into hair and make up and then it was time for the fashion show.
I walked for the TFWE corporate sponsor, Lane Bryant Outlet, Candi Apple Couture,
Mia Amber in Candi Apple Couture
 Monif C.,
Mia Amber in Monif C.
 and new designer Pheline
Mia Amber in Pheline
I’m going to blog more about Pheline and Candi Apple Couture later on to give you more info on the Toronto based designers.

After the show I dashed back to my suite to make a quick change and prepare for my seminar.

A special shout out to BGU for dressing me for the event
Mia Amber in BGU with TFWE model Juliet
I was pleased to see that the ballroom was filled mostly with aspiring models and quickly tweaked my seminar to open it up to any questions the ladies may have had in an effort to further their modeling careers.

We laughed, cried and educated each other.  All in all it was a very moving afternoon.
Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the after party because Designer Monif C.,
Monif C.
Stylist and Monif ‘s assistant Brandon “Blue” Coates
Brandon "Blue" Coates
and I went to dinner in Yorkville (the heart of the Toronto International Film Festival) and got so lost on the way back (no matter what Monif says, it was NOT my fault!) that by the time we made it to the hotel it was well after midnight and I had an early flight the next morning.

Thank you ladies for an incredible weekend! See you next weekend for The Fuller Woman Expo in Detroit!

XOXO,
Mia

Glamour Readers Have Spoken…More Plus!

Posted in Beauty, Curvy News, Entertainment, Hollywood, Pop Culture on September 4, 2009 by miaamber

(Re-Posted from Style-List but I’ve added some photos of the plus models spoken of in the article)

The People Have Spoken – More Nude Plus-Size Models!

by Katie Hintz-Zambrano

So, Glamour magazine is doing just that. After supportive letters flooded in after the magazine ran unairbrushed size 12-14 model Lizzi Miller naked, except for a thong, in the magazine’s September issue, Glamour has decided to focus its lenses on plus-size beauties once again.

For its upcoming November issue, photographer Matthias Vriens shot the full-figured Miller once again, along with her curvy model counterparts

and our favorite model-slash-author Crystal Renn

Crystal Renn

Renn, whose book “Hungry” about overcoming an eating disorder is being released next week, told StyleList that she has high hopes for fashion moving away from the waif aesthetic. “It starts with the sample sizes and I think designers are becoming more aware. I think there have been many positive changes. I’ve done all of the Vogue’s and Dolce & Gabbana ads. It’s just a matter of time before it’s brought back to mainstream,” Renn said. “Women want to see themselves in the pictures — they want to see their size, color and height. I think if that happens, it’ll make women feel more empowered and they’ll love themselves more.”

Ditto

Gossip’s Beth Ditto poses in the buff on the debut cover of Britain’s Love magazine. Photo courtesy of Love Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive says that was certainly the response received after 20-year-old Miller posed with her slightly saggy stomach and full thighs on display. “I am gasping with delight…I love the woman on p 194!” said one reader, who wrote into Leive. Another reader said: “This beautiful woman has a real stomach and did I even see a few stretch marks? This is how my belly looks after giving birth to my two amazing kids! This photo made me want to shout from the rooftops.”

With Forever 21 launching a plus-size line, Gossip’s Beth Ditto going nude on the cover of Love (and designing a clothing line for Evans), “Dance Your Ass Off” on prime-time and even British Vogue’s editor-in-chief Alexandra Schulman denouncing the size zero samples used by the major design houses, could we see a curvy girl trend on the rise?

I really hope so!

XOXO,

Mia
