Mia Amber at The Fuller Woman Expo

Posted in Curvy News, Mia in Motion on September 29, 2010 by miaamber

I had a blast at this years Fuller Woman Expo, Detroit!

Meet meeting so many curvy women from all over the U.S. and Canada as well as seeing some familiar faces was a real joy!

Here are a few photos from the weekend…

Kicking it backstage with Keynote Speaker and all around lovely friend, Kim Coles

I met royalty too…

This years panel discussion was sponsored by Igigi who provided all of our wardrobe (the dress I’m wearing in the above photo is by Igigi) and it included plus size power houses such as Judge Karen, Kim Coles and ANTM winner Whitney Thomson.

Other speakers throughout the day such as The Bigest Losers Carla Triplett left the audience fired up and ready to go lead their best lives!

Shout out to my buddy, model Shante Gordon for coming with me to the expo this year!

A very special thanks to Cassy Jones-McBride and The Fuller Woman Expo team for rolling out the red carpet for me and being stellar individuals! I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to be the face of the expo.

Big hugs!

The other night, as I was headed out, it started to pour! With no time to fret over my hair (which I’d spent an hour curling) I tried something new…

New Mag to Only Feature Plus Models

Posted in Curvy News, Fashion on September 29, 2010 by miaamber

Just As Beautiful is new magazine hitting UK newsstands which will strictly feature models sized 14-20!

What it will not feature is tips on dieting!

Here’s what Editor Sue Thomason, a size 18, had to say:

‘If you’re a woman over Size 14, you’re likely to be stuck for something to read that doesn’t make you feel like you’re too big or “wrong” because you’re not a Size Zero.

‘We want our readers to know that they don’t need to change their appearance to ‘fit in’ or be truly happy.

‘Most people only think they need to change because they’re constantly exposed to the message that they do – and shown images of impossibly skinny models that they’re told they “should” look like.’

Can’t wait to see more!

Open Letter to Target

Posted in Fashion, News on September 29, 2010 by miaamber

I recently signed a letter (which was written by The Curvy Fashionista and other Fatsionistas) petitioning mega retailer Target to open its mind and include plus sizes in their guest designer collaborations.

Here is the letter:

Dear Target,

Each season, you skillfully and beautifully execute exclusive designer collaborations and partnerships with leading fashion designers. As plus size women, we are oft neglected, overlooked and always sized out of your collections.

We have money to spend as much as our straight sized sisters do. We love to look just as fabulous as the other Fashionistas, yet you neglect to even think of us in the equation. We fawn over the Zac Posen for Target, and strategically finagle through the cuts that could pass on our curves; salaciously we look as each fantastic and highly coveted collaboration passes us along- due to you ignoring our thirst and hunger for fashion.

Therefore, I, Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista, Patrice of Afrobella, and Sarah of Style It Online have come together with our followers and the fa(t)shionistas within the plus size community to request, demand, and call for an inclusion of and/or special designer collaborations for the plus size fa(t)shionistas.

We are all in this together!

Renn and Richardson

Uber model Crystal Renn is once again seen on the pages of Parisian Vogue.  This time she was shot by famed photographer Terry Richardson and truthfully I’m not sure what to think…

Elena Miro Dropped from Milan Fashion Week

Posted in Curvy News, Fashion on September 23, 2010 by miaamber

International plus fashion designer Elena Miro who has opened Milan Fashion Week consistently for the past five years was abruptly dropped from the MFW schedule this week.  The reason given was that her label wasn’t in line with what ready to wear week should be.

Check out this report:

I’m happy that Miro went on with the show as planned.  Maybe by next season MFW will re-open it’s mind and schedule to include beauty in all shapes and sizes.
