“Should Fatties Get a Room…” or Just Cancel Their Subscriptions?

Posted in Entertainment, News on October 27, 2010 by miaamber

Marie Claire writer Maura Kelly put a very fat foot in her mouth with an article she wrote based on the romance of TV characters Mike & Molly called, “Should Fatties Get a Room?”

Here’s an excerpt:
“I think I’d be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other … because I’d be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room – just like I’d find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine [sic] addict slumping in a chair.”

I’m not sure if I’m more upset with Maura for her closed-minded beauty ideals and societal views or if I’m more disappointed with Marie Claire for condoning her behavior.

If I had a subscription to the magazine I would seriously have to reconsider it at this point.  Luckily I don’t have to make that decision.

What do you think?

Crystal Renn On Losing Weight

Posted in Curvy News, Fashion, Get Fit Not Thin on October 27, 2010 by miaamber

During an interview with New York Mag at the Seven Bar Foundation fashion benefit, Super Model Crystal Renn gave an explanation for her noticable weight loss…

How do you feel about people saying you may have lost too much weight?
But then if I gained weight for them, that would be called a binge-eating disorder. And, you know, a lot happened to me in the last year. About a year and a half ago, I had a lot of personal things going on. And I went hiking and I wanted to get my shit together. I wanted to take care of myself. It had been eight years since I’d worked out. I’d suffered an eating disorder and I used to exercise eight hours a day. But I’d recovered. It’s time to change things, to give it a chance again. I guess you could say that through my life changes and what was going on, I wanted to make some changes in my life and taking care of my health was one of them.

What are you doing differently now than in the past?
Well, I’m so active. In the past, I avoided exercise because it brought back terrible feelings. I wasn’t ready. And I was scared that maybe I was going to be addicted again. That’s a fear that goes through your mind, whenever you’re getting over an addiction or a disease like anorexia, yeah, I absolutely was worried. But then I guess you could say my life changed in a really drastic way. For one, there was a split-up that I went through that was very difficult, and I thought, “You know what? I need to be in a good place. I need to find me again.” So I went with my grandmother to Patagonia. One of the things on my list was to go to this place, after seeing it in a Vogue issue with Caroline Trentini. I said, “I’m going to go there.” And I went backpacking for three weeks and I came back and I had lost some weight. And basically I’ve been traveling ever since. This is just how my body is now. It’s great. I have to be honest, when I was a size 12, I was just like, “This is how it is. Just accept it, like, love it. And I did.” And then to have it change all over again, it’s kind of been an adjustment for me. It’s been strange, actually, because it’s not something I’ve been trying to do.

What size are you now?
I would say an 8-to-10.

Hair Help

Posted in Mia Amber's Model Mail, Mia Mail on October 26, 2010 by miaamber

Here’s a letter I received from an aspiring model:

Hi Mia,

I am currently pursuing my passion for plus size modeling and I’m seeking representation. I currently have a long, full weave but my natural hair is short and relaxed.   Is it ok to have a variety of pictures in my portfolio with both long and short hair?

When looking for work with my short hair will some agencies or casting directors be turned off from my short hair? Or if they think my hair would look better long, will they suggest I get extensions before the shoot?
I just don’t want to sell myself short by going back to my natural, relaxed short hair.

Thanks for writing, C!  You asked about two different things.

In my opinion, when it comes to modeling, having diverse looks in your portfolio is an asset.  I recently had a client look through my portfolio and chose a hairstyle for my booking with them!  Models need to be chameleons but don’t get locked into a look unless it is highly demanded of you and easy to manipulate for work.

When it comes to meeting Casting Directors, it’s been my experience that they like you to look exactly like your headshot.  For example if you have a short afro on your headshot, you should not show up with a 26″ bone straight weave when you arrive for your audition.

If possible, take a look at the portfolios, comp cards and headshots of working models and actors to see what they are doing right!

The bottom line in both situations is to be comfortable being yourself… a blank canvas is easier to work with and if someone if “turned off” by the “real you” keep it moving!

I hope this helps.

Mia Amber Attends Curves for Change Launch

Posted in Curvy News, Mia in Motion on October 26, 2010 by miaamber

Last week I happily attended the launch party for Wilhelmina models’, WCurve division Curves for Change.  The event was heavily attended by those in the know and I had a ball catching up with plus model friends and fashionistas alike.

Though we were both exhausted from our respective bookings throughout the day, plus model pal Tricia Campbell and I met up and headed to the party together.

Once inside, we caught up with friends, Plus Model Mag editor and plus supermodel Fluvia Lacerda.

Unfortunately I had to head home early to get ready for the following days castings and go sees, but a great time was had by all for a wonderful mission.
