Mia Amber, Birthday Girl

Posted in Mia in Motion, Uncategorized on July 28, 2010 by miaamber

This past weekend, I celebrated my birthday by doing something I’ve never done before!

A few weeks ago I stood on line with thousands of other New Yorker’s to obtain a Key to the City of New York which would allow unprecedented access to sites in every borough of NYC!

I decided that my birthday was as good a day as any to get started on my adventure!

After a quick elevator mini-cell phone photo shoot… (Don’t judge–it was my birthday!)

the day began at Eddie’s Sweet Shop.  Eddie’s is a place I had visited many times as a child so I was excited to see how it may have changed over the years.  The folks at Eddie’s were so kind and rolled out the red carpet as soon as I showed them my key!

Up next was a trip into NYC. I headed uptown to the Whitney Museum.  It had begun to pour by this point so after waiting out the rain it was time to unlock the adventure at the Whitney.

After a nice chat with the employees it was time to take a break from the hunt and head downtown to Times Square where I had a date with a king!

There were absolutely no cell phones or photos allowed of any kind inside the exhibit but it was incredible! The jewelry, furniture and relics of the time were impeccably maintained and stunning. I learned so much about King Tut, a.k.a. The Boy King.  The actual mummy was the only thing that was a replica in the entire exhibit because The Kings body is not allowed outside of Egypt.  If you’re in NYC make your way over to the exhibit. It’s here through January.

Up next was more action in the form of a movie! Salt starring Angelina Jolie was FANTASTIC!

I actually found myself holding my breath a few times due to the action!

After dinner in Times Square it was pretty late but there was time for one last stop on my Key to the City Adventure. I made my way over to Bryant Park and had fun not only using the key but meeting several other folks who were there for the same reason. We had great conversations about which sites we’d all visited and which we were planning to get to.

All in all it was a wonderful day!

P.S.  I didn’t tell you what I saw at each venue because I don’t want to ruin the surprise of what’s in store for you if you’re able to get your hands on a key but it’s totally worth it!

Go Ellen…Go Glamour…Go Plus!

Posted in Uncategorized on December 2, 2009 by miaamber

In an earlier post, I let you know about the November issue of Glamour magazine where fabulous plus models were to be showcased due to reader reaction over plus model Lizzie Miller in all her glory. ..

Ellen recently had Lizzie and some of the other lovelies from the new spread on her show to talk about fashion, their photoshoot and societal standards.   Ellen was so refreshingly candid!  LOVE HER!

Glamour Editor Cindi Leive even pledged to continue to use more models of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities in future issues so I’m psyched!

In case you missed that issue of Glamour, take a look…

The photo is an obvious homage to a late 80’s Herb Ritts photo featuring the Supermodels of the day (and still reining “straight size” queens in my opinion…)

I am super excited to see this level of attention being paid to my industry and I hope the momentum continues to grow.

Curvy Girls… Rock On!

Good Old Fashioned, High Fashion Sizism

Posted in Uncategorized on November 12, 2009 by miaamber

Gemma Ward, one of the most talented Supermodels in the new generation of mannequins has quit modeling.

Gemma Ward

After these paparazzi photos of her out and about made the rounds on the internet to a chorus of “Look How Fat She Is” the doll-like waif contacted her manager and announced that she was done with the business with no immediate plans to return to the catwalk.

One blogger even went so far as to say that Ward could carve out a niche for herself with a career as a plus model.  I’m disgusted and disturbed by this. I’m happy that Gemma stood up for herself but I wish she hadn’t quit.

To me she’s one of the best.  I wish she would have used the attention and taken a stand against sizism in the fashion industry.

I understand that this is a lot for a 22-year-old to handle but something needs to be done. Girls all over the world can’t be led to believe that this is “fat” or un-pretty.

As a society we need to be more diligent about accepting all body types and not holding up a certain body type as the standard of beauty.

2009 has seen some pretty ugly attacks on Supermodels and the like.  Designer Woolfgang Joop stated that Heidi Klum was too much of a “cow” to do runway

Heidi Klum

Shoe Designer Christian Louboutian was quoted stating that Barbie’s cankles made them too fat for his shoes!

Ralph Lauren fired model Filippa Hamilton because she was “too fat” at a size 4 and her photoshopped her campaign ads to near distortion.

And formerly full-figured designer Karl Lagerfeld had this gem to offer, “No one wants to see curvy women, you’ve got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly.”

My sentiments exactly...

What is the solution? What can we do to end the sizism in the fashion industry and to give women around the globe a chance at healthy societal self-esteem?

2010 has to be better.  Our future as women depends on it.

You guys know I’m all about the curvy girl doing her thing so I’m not really sure how to say this but I need to.

I love Mo’Nique and I’m proud of her accomplishments including her new eponymous talk show on BET.

Monique, Weeknight's at 11 on BET

That’s actually why I’m writing.

Did I already say that I love Mo’Nique? I do.

Can’t wait to see her dramatic turn in Precious next month…hope she gets nominated for an Oscar… the best is yet to come.

All that being said… Does anyone else wish she would STOP YELLING on her show?!?!

Lookin good Mo'

Looking good, though.
